چکیده
In 1932 Hamilton and Schwartz (1) described a method for the detection of small amounts of parathyroid hormone, three to five units, in preparations of the hormone and in blood. In 1936 Hamilton and Highman (2) presented certain modifications of this test designed to make the method particularly applicable to the detection of abnormally large amounts of parathyroid hormone in the blood of patients suspected of having increased parathyroid function. The test consists, briefly, in measuring the increase in the serum calcium of a rabbit at definite intervals after the rabbit has received an intramuscular injection of the blood or preparation containing parathyroid hormone, the animal being given amounts of calcium chloride solution by stomach tube at definite periods during the experiment. In this communication we present our results obtained with the Hamilton and Highman test, and related blood chemical studies, in patients with chronic nephritis. The parathyroid glands of some of the patients were examined postmortem. Results obtained in toxic goiter and Paget's disease of bone are also briefly presented and discussed.

The structural response of the parathyroid glands to ureteral ligation or bilateral nephrectomy.
I n spite of the great physiological iniportance of the parathyroid glands, little is known concerning the par t played by intra-cellular organelles in their secretory activity. It is obvious that one of the most promising approaches to the solution of this problem is to study the parathyroid cells after the secretory activity of the gland has been stimulated or depressed by experimental means....

متن کاملQuantification and comparison of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase with two methods in normal and paget’s specimens
Background: Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) is synthesized by the osteoblasts and is presumed to be involved in the calcification of bone matrix, though its precise role in the formation process is unknown. The aim of the present study was to measure the BAP activity in Paget's and normal specimens by two different techniques. Methods: Total ALP (TAP) as well as BAP activity-measuring ...
متن کاملVitamin D deficiency in children with Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) and factors affecting response to cholecalciferol therapy: A quasi-experimental study from low-middle income setting
Background and Objective: Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) is characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and abnormal vitamin D (VD) metabolism resulting in high parathyroid hormone secretion. The objective of the study was to determine VD status in children with CKD-MBD and the effect of cholecalciferol therapy in these children. Methods: This quasi-experimental st...
